Victor Hugo and Devhonte Johnson Booked for Openweight Grappling Match at ONE Fight Night 49

ONE Championship has announced that Victor Hugo will make his debut against Devhonte Johnson. The match is contested under submission grappling rules in the openweight division. It is scheduled for ONE Fight Night 49 on Friday, November 6.

Openweight means the athletes are not separated by weight class, so the two competitors can differ considerably in size. Submission grappling is a format in which matches are built around finishing an opponent with a submission hold, without striking.

Openweight matches remove the usual size matching, which puts technique, positional control and size in direct tension. For anyone who trains, they are a useful illustration of how grappling plays out when the body-weight buffer is gone. The announcement also shows a major promotion continuing to give grappling matches a place on its event cards.

ONE Fight Night 49 is scheduled for Friday, November 6.

A submission is a hold that forces an opponent to concede, usually by tapping, and in submission grappling it can end a match on the spot. Which ruleset applies to this match, gi or no-gi, has not been specified in the information available.
